In a word, Sama means hearing sounds and dulcet tones. In the Sufi terms, Sama means singing mystical songs, sometimes accompanied by instruments such as Def, nay, and Tambour, the elation and rotation of the audiences, and the rotation of the body with the trance mode for spiritual purposes.
As Saeb Tabrizi stated:
Love has brought the particles of the world into the Sama,
Like Espand jumping up and down when Espand is in the fire. Love is the end of depression.
The source of the mystical Sama is nothing but the love which burns like a fire and cannot be resisted by humans, so the man melts and disappears in it. Abu Sa'id Abu al-Khair, a mystic of the 11th century AD (5th century LC), also says:
- The Sufi exhorted Sama
- Set the heart on fire
- It is wise to know the child's cradle nurse
- Moves the child in the silence
Hence, the Sufis paid a special attention to Sama, and even, they called it the necessities for the lover and soul of the seeker. The Sufis provided a variety of educational principles for the Sama, including:
-
Creating vitality to get out of lethargy
-
Influencing the listener and stimulating his emotions
-
Making the seeker closer to the spiritual world
